Big areas, such as car parks, can we network

Hi Guys, I’ve purchased 2 × homebase 3, 4-cam kit. (Waiting for delivery) in a nutshell I’ve two bases and 8 cameras.

I share a car park with a neighbour and we both have fibre. We are quite a distance apart.
The entire length is 100 metre and 20 metres wide. I’m at 0 metres, and Vic (my mate) is @ 60 metres

Do I :

  1. Use wifi and use the second base as an extender, can this be achieved or:

  2. Have different systems which neither of us want

Any help is more than appreciated.

Hi, HomeBase3 doesn’t support a Wi-Fi connection it can only use an ethernet cable connection to your modem / router.
The cameras and HomeBase connect to each other wirelessly via Wi-Fi specifically on 2.4G.
I’m not sure what the max distance the cameras can be to communicate with the HomeBase is… 18 metre / 60 feet ?

Cannot use second HomeBase as extender as far as I know.

They are currently stuck in Customs in Seville (ES) and have been there for 3 days, hopefully I should have them late Monday. Once they arrive I’ll begin the installation, I have enrolled verbal help from a local Microsoft engineer who specialises in networks and he’s of the opinion that we can cover the entire area using extenders, Unfortunately he doesn’t know the characteristics of our cameras and told me to seek help, here on this forum. Apparently if it can be done you guys will know how! Here’s to hoping.

I’ll try anything, and what ever I find, good or bad I will publish here, Promise!

the homebase 3"s by themself are useless unless connected directly to your modem or router. the only thing you could try is to setup a mesh network. the system you choose will need to have nodes (extenders) that have ethernet connections. you would then plug the homebase 3’s into the nodes via that ethernet connection. to cover the space you are attempting to cover you may need 4 nodes which would mean you would need 4 homebases. you could probably use homebase 2’s connected to the nodes. i have not heard of anyone attempting this, good luck.

Everything that you’ve just mentioned went completely over my head. Certain things like mesh I’ve recently heard of, but nodes are completely new.

As i pointed out I have a microsoft engineer to turn to (verbally), and I’m sure yours and other persons comments will be analized and put into good practise. He did mention a Yagi then both omnidirectional and elements. I remember these names from my CB Radio days

All suggestions will be answered and forwarded on to him i will re-post my success or failure.

that’s why i put (extenders) right after nodes. nodes in a mesh network extend the range of the network but unlike a wifi extender that shares the wifi signal and slows down the thruput, a node in a mesh network has a separate band that is used exclusively to join to a string of nodes until they get back to the mesh router. this type of daisy chaining can extend the network greatly without loss of thruput. have you seen the cameras at stop lights and wondered how they are connected. they are part of a mesh network joining many cameras over a large area. go onto you tube and search for mesh network videos. as an example, netgear has a mesh network they call “orbi”. you might visit with netgear support and let them know what you are trying to do. they will be much more help then microsoft.

OMG, Thank Q so much, I’ve taken your advice and theres a ton of stuff on Mess Networks and Nodes on YouTube. Wow! I was surprised to find a total new world that exists around us that we didn’t know was there. I’m sure this is every thing we need.

My only problem left is getting this stuff through customs. Since Brexit theres a lot of ’ You’ve made your bed now lay in it’ and ‘Stuff you’ your not one of us’ This will in time disappear but it is rife here and trying to get things done is 10× more difficult, especially buying direct from the UK. I receive very little compassion and help. I’ve been told Germany is probably the best place to source tech stuff so I’ll apply my focus over there, at least its in the EU.

My 2× base 3 4-cam kit with import tax and carrier has cost over $2100 its taken 3 days to cross the states, the atlantic germany and now Spain (Seville) and 4 days and counting crossing the clearing house floor. Once they arrive i’ll give the package a big hug and smother it in kisses. That’s if it comes.

Having Netgear’s model numbers to hand would be vastly helpful if you would be so king enough to provide them.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Let me just add to what @dpoppo suggested. The nodes / mesh network is a good choice to bring the homebase3 closer to your cameras without the need of running a long ethernet cable.
Now just in case you misunderstood…
You cannot place a node between homebase and camera to extend its range.

Ok i think that i grab the rule and its concept but remain unclear in its deployment. Do i build the mess first so that i have my fibre, router nodes on a particular frequency around my premises, check that i have coverage then sit my base and cameras upon it.

Sorry its a technology and age thingy, i certainly need some explanation and reassurance.

My friend in the UK Posted this message on FB way back in September :

‘Bought a couple of Fritz 7530 routers from eBay for about £20-odd quid each. They can be converted to 5 port wireless mesh repeaters via an option in their setting. Much cheaper than the “official” mesh repeaters.’

thats why i suggest getting in touch with netgear support . after you explain what you are trying to do they might supply you with a schematic of where you would place the nodes and hombases (if any) to get the best possible result.

Tried for ages with Netgear support I cant seem to get past the fact I didn’t have a serial or model number as they don’t appear to have pre-sales support. (I probably spent over 30 mins going around in circles) I’m sure they do have support for corporations and industrial planners, but off-the-cuff Joe Public there’s Nada

Ok i promised an update. and I’m pleased to say its BINGO!

I’m usually a very hands on guy, but in this case I would say i am definitely ‘Out of my depth’ ‘but stuff it’ I thought Let’s give it a bash.

My site houses 35 motorhomes it measures 60×20 metres and my neighbour has a further 30 × 20 making the entire area 2000mtr sq in the shape of an oblong. (https://parkperales.com) 4 of these motorhomes are mine and valuable.

I’ve purchased and installed 4 Deco X20 nodes one acting as the router. The product claims to be Wi-Fi 6 but I’m only receiving Wi-Fi 5 this may be down to my internet provider so i still have issues. By the way the X20 was the wrong choice as TP-link have now brought out a Wi-Fi 7 that is for outdoor use. I’ll see if I can get TP to sponsor 4 free nodes.

Sat within 1 metre from the homebase 380 I registered and installed my eight camera’s with consummate ease. The proof of the pudding came whilst i walked down the car park with a camera in one hand and my mobile in the other. The live video stream was unbroken as I walked the entire length, and the speed never dropped once below 433mhz

The 330 are brilliant but I’m having issues whilst using the zoom whilst streaming. I get 2× & 4× always spasmodically I get 8× Why? I have no idea, but i shall investigate.

Last night was my first overnight ‘watch’ and all batteries registered 79% even though there was no incidents however i did boast a couple of times with friends and neighbours. I also have four guests, lets wait until the novelty wears off and the cameras get a full days of the Spanish Sunshine.

Next Job: is automating my 6 metre Roller Gate, hopefully over the internet. Based upon the above any help would be accepted.

Job 2: I’d like to find out the IP address of all eight cameras and add these to my website (behind user name and password) The idea is that my tenants can view their vehicles, but also promote my services.

A sincere ‘thank you’ for the advice and assistance, much appreciated.

Thanks for the update Trev…
Good that it’s working out.

Job 2: you can find the individual camera IP addresses in Camera Settings / About Device.
Though the way you intend to put it on your website will not work because the feed is encrypted.
There is an alternate route, if you’re tenants install the eufy App then you can grant them access to the camera that you want them to view.
It’s called Family and Guests. You’ll find it on the apps homepage settings, you will be the administrator. Just make sure you don’t grant them access to any of the settings for camera.

Ha ha! I discovered late last night a hyper link to a EUFY-LIFE page

https://mysecurity.eufylife.com/#/login?type=/camera

Once there; Enter these details which I’ve added to my users

Select Your Region: Spain
guest@parkingperales.com
Password: Whitehouse5?

The question is: is it Spain or the users location, time will tell i suppose.

Although this is not perfect, it would appear to freeze and shut down in-between switching cameras. Now this is either a bug in the software development or my laptop. (This needs reporting)

How safe this way of access is, I have no idea! Can I use individual cameras, again I have no idea. The hyperlink can be written in code and hidden on my website. https://parkperales.com
